Feature Story
One of my favorite stories I've written for BYU's University Communications department was this story featuring BYU professor Ali Crandall and her research involving ACES (adverse childhood experiences). It was difficult including the background and original ACES study that took place over 30 years ago, but I believe it helped my writing skills as I had to write concisely and clearly, even though it was complicated to explain.
Feature Story
I had a chance to write about a short film created by BYU's animation program winning a student academy award. While obviously the title "academy award" sounds very prestigious, this piece taught me about how to use quotes, how to conduct successful interviews to draw the best quotes, how to use quotes in the article and how to write more clearly. It required creativity to make this piece a story and not merely an announcement.
Feature Story
I had the opportunity to find and write numerous feature stories while interning at University Communications. I interviewed Paul Adams, a photography professor at BYU my first week on the job. He told me about his project involving the last known speakers of endangered North American languages and how it would be displayed in the Smithsonian. I instantly knew I wanted to write this feature story!
Skyscraper Story + Pitch
In this skyscraper story we wrote for BlendTec, we wanted to get a backlink from a blogger with the blog southerncurlsandpearls.com. The original blog post had a smoothie recipe for glowing skin. To better this story, we added the ingredient list with the benefits of each ingredient. This allows users to search for the ingredients they want based on the benefits they desire for their skin. This piece gave me the skills to create successful skyscrapers stories as well as reach out to bloggers for meaningful backlinks.
News Release
This is a news release I wrote about a BYU forum. Through this I learned how to write clearly and concisely, as well as target readers self-interests.
